Job Loses His Health

2 ^(A)Again, there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and ^[a]Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. ² The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” ³ The Lord said to Satan, “Have you ^[b]considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man ^[c]fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still ^(B)holds firm to his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ^[d]ruin him without cause.” ⁴ Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has, he will give for his life. ^5 (C)However, reach out with Your hand now, and ^(D)touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face!” ⁶ So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your ^[e]power, only spare his life.”

⁷ Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with ^(E)severe boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. ⁸ And Job took a piece of pottery to scrape himself while ^(F)he was sitting in the ashes.

⁹ Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold firm your integrity? Curse God and die!” ¹⁰ But he said to her, “You are speaking as one of the foolish women speaks. ^(G)Shall we actually accept good from God but not accept adversity?” ^(H)Despite all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

¹¹ Now when Job’s three friends heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, they came, each one from his own place—Eliphaz the ^(I)Temanite, Bildad the ^(J)Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to ^(K)sympathize with him and comfort him. ¹² When they ^[f]looked from a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them ^(L)tore his robe, and they ^(M)threw dust over their heads toward the sky. ^13 (N)Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

The Watchman’s Duty

33 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ² “Son of man, speak to the ^(A)sons of your people and say to them, ‘If I bring a sword upon a land, and the people of the land take one man from among them and make him their watchman, ³ and he sees the sword coming upon the land and ^(B)blows the ^[a]horn and warns the people, ⁴ then ^[b]someone who hears the sound of the horn but ^(C)does not take warning, and a sword comes and takes him away, his ^(D)blood will be on his own head. ⁵ He heard the sound of the horn but did not take warning; his blood will be on himself. But had he taken warning, he would have ^(E)saved his life. ⁶ But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the horn and the people are not warned, and a sword comes and takes a person from them, he is ^(F)taken away for his wrongdoing; but I will ^[c]require his ^(G)blood from the watchman’s hand.’

⁷ “Now as for you, son of man, I have ^[d](H)appointed you as a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a ^[e]message from My mouth and give them a ^(I)warning from Me. ⁸ When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will ^(J)certainly die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked about his way, that wicked person shall die for his wrongdoing, but I will ^[f]require his blood from your hand. ⁹ But if you on your part warn a wicked person to turn from his way and he ^(K)does not turn from his way, he will die for his wrongdoing, but you have ^(L)saved your life.

¹⁰ “Now as for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what you have ^[g]said: “Surely our offenses and our sins are upon us, and we are ^(M)rotting away in them; ^(N)how then can we ^[h]survive?”’ ¹¹ Say to them, ‘^(O)As I live!’ declares the Lord ^[i]God, ‘I take ^(P)no pleasure at all in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked ^(Q)turn from his way and live. ^(R)Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then should you die, house of Israel?’

Keep Fervent in Your Love

4 Therefore, since ^(A)Christ has ^[a]suffered in the flesh, ^(B)arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because ^(C)the one who has ^[b]suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, ^2 (D)so as to live ^(E)the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human lusts, but for the ^(F)will of God. ³ For ^(G)the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, ^[c](H)having pursued a course of indecent behavior, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries. ⁴ In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them in the same excesses of ^(I)[d]debauchery, and they ^(J)slander you; ⁵ but they will give an account to Him who is ready to judge ^(K)the living and the dead. ⁶ For ^(L)the gospel has for this purpose been ^[e]preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as people, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.

^7 (M)The end of all things ^[f]is near; therefore, ^(N)be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of ^[g]prayer. ⁸ Above all, ^(O)keep fervent in your love for one another, because ^(P)love covers a multitude of sins. ^9 (Q)Be hospitable to one another without ^(R)complaint. ^10 (S)As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good ^(T)stewards of the ^[h]multifaceted grace of God. ^11 (U)Whoever speaks is to do so as one who is speaking ^(V)actual words of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving ^[i](W)by the strength which God supplies; so that ^(X)in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, ^(Y)to whom belongs the glory and ^[j]dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Share the Sufferings of Christ

^12 (Z)Beloved, do not be surprised at the ^(AA)fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though something strange were happening to you; ¹³ but to the degree that you ^(AB)share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that at the ^(AC)revelation of His glory ^(AD)you may also rejoice and be overjoyed. ¹⁴ If you are insulted ^[k](AE)for the name of Christ, ^(AF)you are blessed, ^(AG)because the Spirit of glory, and of God, rests upon you. ¹⁵ Make sure that ^(AH)none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a ^[l](AI)troublesome meddler; ¹⁶ but if anyone suffers as a ^(AJ)Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to ^(AK)glorify God in this name. ¹⁷ For it is time for judgment ^(AL)to begin ^[m]with ^(AM)the household of God; and if it ^(AN)begins ^[n]with us first, what will be the outcome for those ^(AO)who do not obey the ^(AP)gospel of God? ^18 (AQ)And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, ^[o]what will become of the ^(AR)godless man and the sinner? ¹⁹ Therefore, those also who suffer according to ^(AS)the will of God are to entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

The Seventy-two Sent Out

10 Now after this ^(A)the Lord appointed ^[a]seventy-two ^(B)others, and sent them ^(C)in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. ² And He was saying to them, “^(D)The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. ³ Go; ^(E)behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves. ^4 (F)Carry no money belt, no ^[b]bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the way. ⁵ And whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ ⁶ And if a ^[c]man of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you. ⁷ Stay in ^[d]that house, eating and drinking ^[e]what they provide; for ^(G)the laborer is deserving of his wages. Do not move from house to house. ⁸ Whatever city you enter and they receive you, ^(H)eat what is served to you; ⁹ and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘^(I)The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ ¹⁰ But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, ¹¹ ‘^(J)Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet ^[f]be sure of this, that ^(K)the kingdom of God has come near.’ ¹² I say to you, ^(L)it will be more tolerable on that day for ^(M)Sodom than for that city.

¹³ “^(N)Woe to you, ^(O)Chorazin! Woe to you, ^(P)Bethsaida! For if the ^[g]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in ^(Q)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in ^[h](R)sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it will be more tolerable for ^(S)Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. ¹⁵ And you, ^(T)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades!

¹⁶ “^(U)The one who listens to you listens to Me, and ^(V)the one who rejects you rejects Me; but the one who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

The Joyful Results

¹⁷ Now the ^[i]seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even ^(W)the demons are subject to us ^[j]in Your name!” ¹⁸ And He said to them, “I watched ^(X)Satan fall from heaven like lightning. ¹⁹ Behold, I have given you authority to ^(Y)walk on snakes and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. ²⁰ Nevertheless, do not ^[k]rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^(Z)your names are recorded in heaven.”

^21 (AA)At that very ^[l]time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I ^[m]praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for doing so was well pleasing in Your sight. ^22 (AB)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and ^(AC)no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son determines to reveal Him.”

^23 (AD)Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see; ²⁴ for I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things that you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things that you hear, and did not hear them.”
